Continuing its aim to prepare students for careers and advancement in high-growth sectors of the economy, American Sentinel is now offering an accredited Associate of Science degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
The study of geotechnology and advanced digital mapping and analysis can be applied to an ever-widening range of industries and government agencies. The use of digital technology to help people work with and understand geographic information reaches from the mapping of underground mine sites to outer space, and in applications as diverse as targeting market segments and planning evacuation routes.
"The US Department of Labor previously identified geotechnology as one of the three most important emerging and evolving fields for the coming years," says Mary Adams, president of American Sentinel University. "Along with nanotechnology and biotechnology, fields connected to GIS and geospatial data analysis will be major career growth areas in the next two decades."
Many of the best-trained geographic information systems employees at government agencies are reaching retirement age," adds Michael Gibson, chair of the Department of Information Systems at American Sentinel. "Meanwhile, we're seeing increasing new demand for GIS personnel from defense contractors, retail chains, natural resource companies, and government agencies that are just starting to use geotechnology heavily."
American Sentinel University is accredited by the U.S. Secretary of Education-recognized Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC). American Sentinel is the first DETC-accredited U.S. college to offer an AS in GIS. The program is designed to prepare students for transfer to a four-year degree program focusing on Geographic Information Systems or for entry-level positions as GIS technicians and users. This is accomplished by combining a strong general education component with core requirements in cartography, GIS software, and GIS concepts and techniques.
Founded as a Vanderbilt University Technology Company, American Sentinel University delivers to its students and their employers the competitive advantages of unique online education programs focused on the needs of high-growth sectors. See more at AmericanSentinel.edu.
